Dominican University of California Portfolio
As the Dominican University of California website states, "The Department of Education develops educators who demonstrate moral and ethical purpose, apply current educational and information literacy theories, use intercultural knowledge in the classroom, and sustain professional excellence to serve the needs of a democratic and diverse society." Integral steps toward this path include many formative and summative anchor assignments, which I have provided below.
Educational Philosophies
Some of the most powerful and introspective projects I completed as a student in the DUoC Single Subject Credential and MS in Education program were those that asked me to compose written records of my own professional philosophies surrounding education, not just as a teacher, but also as a student. As such, I have included here my overarching educational philosophy, my diversity statement, my own literacy autobiography, and a research paper on Common Core standards I prepared for a debate.
Understanding by Design (UbD)
Creating lesson plans and unit plans using the Understanding by Design method revolves around the simple axiom that by working backward with goals in mind, instructional strategies are more likely to result in those learning goals.

Curricular and Instructional Planning for Students with Special Needs |
Although as a part of my student teaching experience I utilize a district-adopted ELD curriculum and structure, as a part of my DUoC coursework I completed an SIOP lesson plan on the poem "Abuelito Who" by Sandra Cisneros.

In our course that focused on exceptional students with diverse learning challenges we culminated with presentations on low-incidence learning disabilities.

Instructional Strategies |
Assessment |
As an instructor it is a constant task to always strive for more effective and more engaging instructional activities. Different strategies work for different students, or for different classes year-to-year. In order to document just a few of these strategies I've created a "Tool Kit" of the growth and progress I've made in my own teaching skills this year.

While assessment is a constant and dynamic part of each of my lesson plans and unit plans, one assessment I am particularly proud of having created is my literacy pre-assessment. This is specifically aimed at high school juniors, and serves the dual purpose of gauging their analytical skills and introducing the concept of Realism as a literary genre.
